Samsung reveals why new Galaxy Note 9 will definitely not explode or catch fire

[ad_1]

It may be the hottest gadget in town right now, but Samsung has promised that its new phone will absolutely not catch fire like one of its ill-fated predecessors.

‘We’ve moved on from that,’ said Samsung’s Kate Beaumont when we asked how her company’s latest gadget, the Galaxy Note 9, is designed to avoid a repeat of the exploding phone saga of 2016.

The Galaxy Note 7 was an unmitigated disaster for the South Korean company, which was forced to recall millions of the handsets when battery issued caused a small number of them to combust.

Now the brand spanking new Galaxy Note 9 is here and the company is determined to ensure that history won’t repeat itself.

A few models of the Galaxy Note 7 had battery issues

‘We’ve instituted a water-based carbon cooling system that is unique to Samsung, in addition to the eight-step battery safety check we created,’ Beaumont, who is director of product management, services and commercial strategy at Samsung UK and Ireland, told Metro.co.uk.

‘It [the Galaxy Note 9] is three times more effective from a cooling perspective than the Note 8,’ she said, noting that the new £899 phone boasts a 4,000mAh battery and won’t heat up even if you’re running a bunch of apps simultaneously.

So you won’t get asked to hand over the Note 9 before boarding an airplane?

‘Absolutely not,’ Beaumont says firmly.

In fact, it turns out that Samsung’s plus-sized Note range of phones actually commands the most loyal fan base. So much so that users were unwilling to hand back their Note 7’s even after official warnings.

But, from a safety standpoint, there was no way around it. Samsung shared the findings of an investigation into the phone with the wider industry in an effort to make sure the lithium-ion batteries we all walk around with in our pockets stay flame-free.

That loyalty means there’s an appetite for the Note 9 even if it’s got an eyebrow-raising price.

‘The Note is our showcase device, and it doesn’t do the volume [of sales] of the S series,’ said Beaumont, after explaining that the company’s portfolio of devices usually benefits from the trickle-down tech of the higher-priced models.

And, in fact, while the entry-level price of the Note 9 is £30 more expensive than the £869 price of the Note 8, the base-level storage has been boosted from 64GB to 128GB. There are also improvements to the camera, internal specs and, of course, the S Pen stylus.

‘I would say the functionality of the S Pen with Bluetooth,’ replied Beaumont when asked what her number one feature of the new phone would be.

‘You can use it to take photos from any angle,’ she said, referring to the fact the stylus can be used as a remote shutter button for the main device.

If you’re just happy to go ahead and sign up, then you can pre-order it now on Samsung’s website and the phone will launch in the UK on August 24.
